started like so many flocks as a 4-H project
with Jason and his two brothers.
Then, in 1991, Jason and his brother bought two ewes from Jason’s agriculture teacher, and lambed them in 1992. In the mid 1990’s they bought a small group of ewes from the Mike Mauck family each year for the next two years and a Fields Legend son they owned. They used him for one year. In 1996 Jason and his brothers made a decision to purchase a ram from Tom and Val Slack. This was a ram that was from the Time Out and Longbody lines. They retained the best females out of this ram for the five years they had him, using the line breeding philosophy that Jason adopted from Tom through their friendship. Occasionally they brought in a ram from Tom to inject a quality they were trying to improve while still tying in to the Slack genetics. This created a linebred set of females that have been the basis of the Shuck flock.
In 2005, Jason was married to Theresa Smith. 2005 also marked the purchase of the first outcross female to the flock in nearly ten years. This was a Bodacious bred female from the Greiner flock. She was bred to an Edge son named “Fletch.” They retained a ram lamb out of this ewe and have continued to line him up on the ewe flock. During the breeding season of 2006, two new rams were used: the keeper ram lamb from the Greiner ewe named Tyrone; and the keeper from a Total Blast son and Slack 3228 (sister to the Champion heavyweight Suffolk from the 2002 IN state fair shown by Leininger) - this lamb was named Almost. Both were used on a small group of ewes, with the hope to get females and then line back up on each others daughters. Still utilizing the Slack bred ewe base with the outcross Greiner bred sheep. These two rams’ first crops arrived in 2007. In 2006, 3228 was bred to Toga and created another keeper ram that we named Frat Boy. We bred him to a select number of ewes and were able to keep a couple of females out of him as well.
In the fall of 2007 Jason and Theresa also purchased a small group of Hampshire females that were intensely linebred from Joe Hall in Tennessee. These ewes are rich in Mike Hancock genetics and have worked very well on the lined up Suffolk rams we have. We have been able to create a small number of females out of this group and are folding these back into the rest of the flock.
Our philosophy has been to create functional sheep that have structural integrity not only on their feet and legs but also their skeletons. These females need to have plenty of muscle but still maintain balance, femininity, and not only be correct in their rib shape but their depth of body. Our ewes must also be able to do their job in the lambing barn and in the pasture. We continue to adhere to our philosophy of maintaining females that are functional and culling accordingly and making our changes through rams and the occasional elite female purchase. Jason and Theresa would like to thank the Slack family for their friendship, advice and leasing us some incredible stud rams, the Greiner family for their friendship, advice and allowing us to breed to some outstanding stud rams, Joe and Katrina Hall for their friendship and allowing us to acquire a high quality group of Hampshire females and to the Daniels family for sending Clayton a tremendous Dorset female.
Jason and Theresa have two sons, Clayton and Jasper and a daughter, Ireland. Clayton has taken an interest in the Dorset breed and we have started him with a female in which he can build around. Jason and Theresa are also involved with Theresa’s families Standardbred horse farm. Jason also enjoys judging youth livestock expositions and has had the opportunity to do so in several states and has stepped in the ring hundreds of times. Shuck Show Lambs is located an hour north of Richmond, Indiana.
